Acoustic Recording in Joyden's Wood

We love ‘climbing’ out of our comfort zone, and are passionate about climate change. So when we were approached by a team of researchers from the Imperial College of London to help set up acoustic surveillance in a local wooded area, we jumped at the opportunity.

The project began the other side of the world in the tropical forests of Borneo, in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, providing a rich habitat for thousands of species of animals and plants. Monitoring the wildlife living within these areas is essential for scientists studying the effect of human pressures on the health of ecosystems, as well as to ensure the conservation of rare species. After successful research in Borneo back in 2019, COVID restrictions moved research for the project to none other than tropical Kent. This involved the placement of 4 solar-powered audio recorders at 4 different woodland locations. We helped set-up solar panels high up in the forest canopy, as well as the secure strapping of the recorder a few meters from the ground.
